Connect to MSDE
However, when I attempt to add it in EM, it doesn't
exist. Is there any changes I have to make on that
workstation running MSDE so that I can access it via EM ?
Besides, I have made a copy of the MDF file. We just want
to find out what is stored in the database. Is it
possible for us to access the data directly with Access
ADP or we have to attach it to another SQL Server ?
Thanks
Hi,
I. You can very well register and access MSDE using EM. Try identify the SQl
server name by reading the SQL Server Error log and
use the same name to register in EM.
II. You need to attach the MDF and LDF file into a SQL Server by giving
Database name using SP_ATTACH_DB command. After that
you could access the database to read/write the data
Thanks

You will probably find you need to create an alias for the server msde is
running on. Use the client network utility in your SQL Server program group
to do this. Add the alias for whatever network protocol you are using.
Hope this helps

Can you help me on following ?
Have developed Client/Server (VB.NET) application with SQL Server 2000
backend engine. It is working fine. This application can connect to
Database engine if user in our LAN or WAN.
Now, my users need to work on application while they are not in our
network. For instance from Hotel, travel etc.. To achieve this, I
thought to have MSDE installed on user's laptop and get copy of SQL 2k
DB on user machine. But. here I got stuck !. Woudl really appreciate if
you could help me !
MSDE engine, I hope that I can d/load from MS site. Belive that can be
installed easly like other MS application. Upon installation, how can I
get my SQL 2K DB attached or Sychronized ?
What about login id (like "sa") to connect to MSDE engine from my
applciation. I will modify my application user to choose DB engine LOCAL
or LAN. If LAN, I will use my existing connection string. But, LOCAL,
what would be the provider, password, user id etc..
Never user MSDE, so queries will be bit more.
Appreciate all your help to get this resolved.
Many thanks in advance..

configuring SQL server 7.0 client on a windows xp pro machine
workstation. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice that will make this
install go smoothly?
I am not sure what will happen, but any advice would be helpful.
Edward Letendre
Client?
As in the MDAC stack?
XP has MDAC v2.8, which is backward compatible with SQL 7.0

|||Actually I was talking about installing the SQL server client software on a
windows xp professional workstation. I just inserted the cd and followed the
instructions. Everything seemed to work.
I also setup the ODBC settings for the various databases that were to be
connected for various applications that are used on this workstation.
Are there anything else I should look into with SQL server 7.0 and windows
xp professional.
Are there any updates to any of the drivers, applications, etc?

Configuring SQL Express -- getting login failed exception
I have a machine with Windows XP Pro w/SP 2, IIS, SQL Server Express and Visual Studio 2005 installed. When I attempt to open a database from an ASPX page, I'm getting an exception with the message:
"Cannot open database "Tasks" requested by the login. The login failed.
Login failed for user 'MYDEV\ASPNET'."
I've searched the web and found a number of pages that talk about the "Login failed for MACHINE\ASPNET" issue, but I didn't find any with a solution.
For your information (in case it makes any difference), the computer is connected to a domain. And the authentication methods for the virtual directory (in IIS) is configured for "Anonymous access" and "Integrated Windows authentication."
Does anyone know how to configure SQL Server Express (or is it IIS?) so the web page can access the database?
RichardR
Okay, I found a solution.
For anyone else experiencing this problem, here's what I did:
First, I installed the November CTP of SQL Server Management Studio Express.
Then, I added the account MACHINENAME\ASPNET under Security | Logins. I did a right-mouse click on the ASPNET login name and clicked on Properties.
This brought up the Login Properties page for ASPNET. I mapped the ASPNET account to my database selecting the database in the "Default Database" dropdown.
In order for the stored procedures to execute, I also needed to check the db_owner box under the Mappings tab.
Finally, I needed to change the connection string to:
Data Source=MYDEV\SQLEXPRESS;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=False;initial catalog=Tasks;Integrated Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False
Hope this helps anyone else encountering this problem.

Configuring reporting services
Hello Experts,
I have this problem when i go to http://<servername>/reprots
"The attempt to connect to the report server failed.Check your connection information and that the report server is a compatible "
I dont have any problem viewing the deployed reports from the site, http://<servername>/reportserver. only issue is in viewing report manager.
i have searched the forums and did all the suggested changes required in the config file, by adding the full report url and removing the entries in the virtualdirectory tag. still it didnt help....
would be great if someone suggests.
regards,
lakshman.
Hi Lakshman,
Is it RS 2000 or 2005? In RS 2005, you can use RS config tool to see if all sections are correctly configured. If not, fix the problems using the config tool and try again.
Thanks,
Sharmila
Hi Sharmila,
Thanks for the reply.
Its RS2005. I am pretty new to the subject, can you please guide about using the RSConfig tool. Or resources where i can find the subject.
Best Regards,
Lakshman.
|||Hi Sharmila,
At the command prompt, I have done the following actions:
C:\>rsconfig -c -s iplserver -d iplserver -a SQL -u sa -p P@.ssword123445
The command completed successfully
C:\>iisreset
Attempting stop...
Internet services successfully stopped
Attempting start...
Internet services successfully restarted
C:\>
when i try to access the report manager, the error persists.
pl let me know if i have to do something else.
many thanks,
lakshman.
|||Hi Lakshman,
To access the config tool, go to Start ->All Programs -> Microsoft SQL Server -> Configuration Tools -> Reporting Services Configuration. Make sure that all sections are configured properly. You should see a green check mark. Please try this and let me know.
Thanks,
Sharmila

Is it safe to assume the mispelling of Reports is only here in the forums?
|||oops, i wrote it wrong here in the thread, but i was spelling it correctly when i am testing...
Sharmila, thanks for the msg, I have checked that one and got to see that there is a blue exclamation for the "Encryption Keys". and the initialization is not done, i find a red cross. but rest all are okay with a green check mark.
i am not even able to access it the Initialization tab as its giving an error message,
plz help, or just guied me to a resource where i can have all this information..
i appreciate all your time and efforts,
lakshman.
|||Hi,
I have installed the SQL SP2 on the server, and now the server is properly initialized. now i see a green check mark on all the tabs.
But unfortunately the problem still persists. I am seeing the same error:
when i attempt to go to http://<reportserver>/reports
what could be the problem?
many thanks,
lakshman.
Hi Lakshman,
Can you please take a look at the RS logs located here - %programfiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.x\Reporting Services\LogFiles and see what you can find around the same time you see the error or can you include information from the logs?
Thanks,
Sharmila

Configure Report Server - Web Service Identity
Windows 2000 Server / IIS 5 / SQL Server 2005 Developers Edition / .Net 2.0 and .Net 1.1
When I attempt to configure the Report Server, I cannot configure the Web Service Identity, the ASP.NET service account shows blank. I have attempted to edit the rsreportserver.config file, as follows:
<WebServiceAccount>.\ASPNET</WebServiceAccount>
This (stop / start of course). But this only causes the Report Server to not start. If I leave that sectopn blank, the service starts, but I cannot access /Reports...
If I attempt to apply with that sectikon left blank I receive this error:
ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.WMIProviderException: An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 80070005
at ReportServicesConfigUI.WMIProvider.RSReportServerAdmin.SetWebServiceIdentity(String applicationPool)
Please help
On Win2K, the actual ASP.NET account is read from machine.config file at /configuration/system.web/processModel/username. Do you have it set? If not run "aspnet_regiis -i -enable".|||the machine config section is as follows for our setup....
<system.web>
<processModel autoConfig="true"/>

Thanks for your help.. feels like i am getting closer
