Connect to remote RS in SSMS

Got following error when try to connect to remote reporting service in SSMS:

TITLE: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio

The request failed with HTTP status 401: Unauthorized. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.UI.RSClient)

BUTTONS:

OK

No problem to connect to reporting service in SSMS on RS box locally. Use windows authentication with same account in both case. How to configure that? Thanks.

Odd - You're logged in on as the same user on both computers? Are both computers in the same domain?

Can you access the report server in a web browser from the remote computer?

If you can, try this:

in the SSMS connection dialog. Replace machine\instance in the server textbox with the URL to your report server, e.g. http://yourserver/reportserver.

Does that work?

|||Yes, I can access the report server in a web browser from same remote computer where I tried to connect RS in SSMS. Replacing server name with RS url doesn't work either, got same 401 error.|||Is the user in the Administrators group on the box?|||Yes, it's local admin on both server and client machine.|||Very strange.. Since it is a 401 error, maybe you could look in the %windir%\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 for the latest log file to see what request is being denied.|||

Another thing to try is to change the Authentication Type to Digest in Management Studio when logging in from the remote machine. Type in your windows credentials and see if you get the same error.

Looks like you're passing the Report Manager virutal directory. You need to pass the report server virtual directory.

By default these are:

Report Manager: http://localhost/reports

Report Server: http://localhost/reportserver

connect to named instance in a cluster

Windows 2003 N+1 cluster, SQL2005 enterprise + sp2
I have a N+1 cluster and installed default sql instance and one named
instance. SQL Browser service is running on the node which owns the named
instance; UDP port 1434 is opened on the firewall.
I had problem connecting to the named instance. Then I found the port number
in the sql error log which the named instance listens on. Opening this port
in firewall solved the connection problem.
My questions:
1. What's the best/secure way to connect to the named instance in a cluster?
Why does it not work with UDP opened and SQL Browser running before the
specific port is opened?
2. Will the port number change when the sql instance restarts? If yes, how
to assign a static port number?
Thanks.
Claudia
The short answer is that the behavior you observed is perfectly normal.
SQL will decide on a port when the service restarts unless it is a default
instance or you have locked SQL to a specific port number.
You can use the SQL Server Configuration Tool to "lock" the instance to a
specific port. This is done whenever a client needs a static port to
connect to.

connect to AS2000 cube error

Here is my setup: I have Reporting Service and SQL Server 2000 in one box
(Box A), and IIS and Analysis Service in another box (Box B), which has
couple of cubes based on the database in Box A, using SQL Authentication and
Allow save password. Create AS2000 data source at Reporting Project, then
create a report, I can preview the report fine in VS.2003. But I got the
following error after deploying the report to the reportserver and browse the
report:

Cannot create a connection to data source 'Cube'. (rsErrorOpeningConnection)
Get Online Help
Database 'Cube' does not exist.
Do I miss anything?

Thanks

Reporting services and Analysis Services only support Windows authentication.

Another problem with your setup is that even if you use windows authentication you cannot validate users between to servers without using Kerberos and account delegation.

Its possible to use standalone servers and maintain the same windows accounts on the separate machines manually.

Connect to Analysis Services 2005 from Excel 2007

I have recently discovered the ability to connect to an Analysis Service 2005 OLAP connection from Excel 2007. It looks and functions great. I do have one thing that am trying to do, however, that I am hoping it has. Does anyone know of a way that from the Pivot field panel, you can see the description metadata that is defined on the measures and dimensions in the Analysis Services cubes? It would be very useful if this come up in a tooltip or something. Otherwise, the business users will need a supplemental document while they are navigating the cubes.

Thanks in advance for your response.

I'd be interested in knowing how to do this as well.|||Sorry Guys, I don't think there is any way of accessing this data using the out-of-the-box functionality in Excel 2007. I even tried using the CUBEMEMBERPROPERTY() function in Excel, but it did not seem to be able to access the intrinsic properties like DESCRIPTION.|||Yikes! I thought Excel 2007 supported all SSAS2005 features? I can't express how useful and how much of a time-saver this feature would be. The "workaround" is that I'd have to create a big ugly document that our business users will have to print out and refer to. Even a simple tooltip that showed the member description in the dimension/measure browser would be immensely useful.

Is this something that we'd need to file w/ MS Connect?|||Thank you for your responses. I suppose I will have to put together a user-friendly on-line reference for people to use. Hopefully a future version will have this feature.|||

Unfortunately I don't think there is a section on Connect for Excel, otherwise this would definitely be the place to lodge such a query. I will see if I can find out if there is an avenue through which such a request can be lodged.

It is not an SSAS issue as the property is present, Excel just does not expose it. It might be possible to extend Excel to display the descriptions, but I have not had a chance to look into this. It would be possible to generate documentation from the meta-data in SSAS BI Documenter (www.bidocumenter.com) does this, but the documentation it produces might be a bit overwhelming for a business user.

Congrats on SQL Server 2005 RTM

After being in the SQL Server 2000 Service Pack 2 and Service Pack 3
betas I was very excited to be accepted into the Yukon beta. I received my
official beta1 goodies sometime around October 2003. After installing Yukon
for the first time I was shocked and amazed. My traditional enterprise
manager was gone, but it was replaced by a new tool that combined the best
parts of the enterprise manager, query analyzer, and dts into one uber tool.
I've been hooked ever since. I kept track of the all of the beta and ctp
drops and played with them in test environments.
In early January 2005, I was tasked with a new programming project at
work. This is the biggest project I've ever done. I knew I wanted to use
the new SQL Server and VS. Luckily, by the time my research and design on
this project was complete (May/June 05), beta2 was released and I started
digging in. I soon found that most of my hassles and gripes with SQL Server
2000 were resolved. Specifically, stored procedures, the development
environment is much better, I can walk through them line-by-line from VS, and
T-SQL enhancements are great (like the TRY-CATCH blocks!!). The new sql
server is just what we needed, with any luck the project will be early 2006!
Anyway, now that SQL Server 2005 has hit RTM and will ship November 7,
I would just like to congratulate the entire SQL Server 2005 team on a job
well done!
DId you pay the money yet,
or are you's using a pirate copy?

Specifically, stored procedures, the development
environment is much better, I can walk through them line-by-line from VS, an

T-SQL enhancements are great (like the TRY-CATCH blocks!!). The new sql
server is just what we needed, with any luck the project will be early 2006!
Anyway, now that SQL Server 2005 has hit RTM and will ship November 7,
I would just like to congratulate the entire SQL Server 2005 team on a job
well done!DId you pay the money yet,
or are you's using a pirate copy?

Conflict Management

Hi,

I developed an ppc application, where i am using web service for synchronisation, but here i am getting lot of problem while handling conflict management.

Please suggest me how to manage conflicts, using web service.

Thank you,

Prashant

Perhaps the easiest way to ensure that the unit of work that each mobile client is performing is guaranteed unique and avoid conflicts at synch time is to assign each data row a uniqueidentifier or GUID as it's PK and introduce the concept of a last changed datetime so that any changes to a unique data row from more that one mobile user can be applied on the server in the proper chronological order. Even this approach will break down in some synchronization scenarios, so web services are really best when data that needs to be operated on by mobile users can be strongly partitioned from other users or server-side changes to the data while on device.

Hi,

Thanks Darren for your reply,

I want to validate on column level of conflicts, i have given each row a different guid, but column was conflicts i am not able to handle.

Please suggest me.

it's pretty hard to implement your own column level tracking of a single row that can be in multiple states across a population of mobile users. Merge replication uses 3 GUID columns, logic in the Server Agent, and tracking in the Distribution database to pull this off. I guess what I would do is get your web service synch algorithm down to working well with row-level changes and then try to eliminate scenarios where conflicts can occur. You may have to maintain some metadata about "who-pulled-what" on the server to do this. If your problem domain is such that more than one mobile user can pull the same row, you allow any or all of them to change that row (and perhaps the row is changing on the server as well), then you are biting off a pretty complex software engineering challenge to prevent the possibility of conflicts using web service synch. Start out simple and try to eliminate the scenarios where conflicts can occur by strongly partitioning data as much as possible. Column level tracking is nice in that it reduces the amount of data that has to be sent back and forth, but I wouldn't bite that off until you have a simple PutUpdates and GetUpdates working at the table and row level.

configuring user security problem!

Hi,
I am new to sql reporting services. I have just installed sql
reporting service sp1. We have our own web app which uses forms
authentication. I have a page where i use reportviewer control (which
came along with samples)...to run a report...there is a separate
physical report server and on that server, for the Reports virtual
directory i have "anonymous access" set. Within this i have set domain
user and password! Now microsot recommends to use "integrated windows
authentication". But as soon as i set it, my web page gives me report
server error that access is denied. I understand that my web page is
impersonating as local\ASPNET user.
I am very confused! can you help me?
I will really appreciate it
Thanks,
SauminIf you use forms authentication you have to create an extension to implement
it. You need to read up on how to do so if you need this capability. It
requires some effort on your part and it requires enterprise edition. I
suggest that you remove anonymous access for now (so you can learn how to
write a report etc and then implement form based security later). For now,
use integrated security (anonymous access and integrated security is
mutually exclusive). To supplement the info on security in the bol I suggest
this link from Scott Allen:

Configuring the Full-Text Search Service on MSDE

Can anyone tell if MSDE has the full-text service available and if so how to set it up?

Thanks,
Ralph::Can anyone tell if MSDE has the full-text service available and if so how to set it up?

Yes.

No.

Means: Yes, I can tell. No, it simply is not available. You need the "real thing".

Configuring SSIS in an Active\Active Cluster

OK so I am aware that the SSIS service can be clustered relatively easily but my problem is a bit more complex I believe.

I have an Active\Active\Active 3 node cluster running Windows 2003 sp1 all running SSIS packages. What I need is a solution to having an instance fail to another node and still be able to run scheduled SSIS packages through the SQL Agent.

The solution that I have come up with is to have a single network share for all three instances of SSIS running locally on the individual nodes. I have removed the ability for SSIS to look in MSDB by altering the config file and reference only the Packages share on the network for accessability. They all share the same config file on the share as well. The share structure looks something like this simplified example.

\\server1\SSIS\Configuration

\\server1\SSIS\Packages

\\server1\SSIS\Packages\Instance1\

\\server1\SSIS\Packages\Instance2\

\\server1\SSIS\Packages\Instance3\

Once I change the registry to point to the config file all three instances can access the Instance1, 2 or 3 directories.

This works ok for the jobs, and I can access the stored packages under the file system folder only if I'm remotely connected to that particular physical server hosting the service or on the console. The problem I am having though is when users or I attempt to access the SSIS Engine through SSMS from our locale machines. It seems as though SSMS is having trouble with the passthrough of the directory information. On the share I obviously have permissiosn to access the directory structure (full control to be exact) because I can get to it when I access it from SSMS on the server.

This is the error I get...

Configuring SQL Mail without Outlook

Hi,
I have a client that wants to take advantage of SQL Mail (particularly the
SQLAgentMail service) but does not want to install Outlook on the server.
They are fairly immutable on this point.
Is there any other way to create the mail profile without installing outlook.
I realize you can use CDO to send mail, but I want to leverage the operator
notification features of Jobs and Alerts.
Thanks,
SG
At this time, Outlook is the only MAPI provider available. You can use some
alternative email tools, most notably xp_smtp_sendmail from www.sqldev.net.
They are not drop-in replacements for SQL Mail, but can do most all of the
functions with some extra work on your part to glue things together. I have
had good results with no impact on system performance or stability.

Configuring ole db provider for Indexing Service

Hi:

Am trying to access a Indexing Services catalog from SSIS. Problem is configuring the Data Connection.

I chose New Connection, Provider=Microsoft OleDB provider for Indexing Services.

Then I am not quite sure what to fill in for:

A. Server or File Name (I tried the IP address, the machine name, catalog name)

B. Location(tried catalog Name, ip address, machine name)

The Log On to Server frame is disabled.

Test Connection succeeds, but trying to use a Table or a Query does not work out.

How do I configure the Connection?

TIA

Kar

I thought this would be simple enough, but I cant get it to work. Cant find much help on MSDN/BOL either.

Hope somebody here can help me!

TIA

Kar

|||

The following may be a good starting point:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/ado270/htm/mdrefindservprovspec.asp

In general, when searching for OLE DB related information, you can usually also search in docs for technology that uses OLE DB, such as ADO. Things like connection string info and command syntax are usually just pass-through from those technologies to OLE DB, so their documentation will most likely apply.

|||

Thanks,

I managed to get it work, but the nomenclature(OLE DB versus SSIS Connection Manager Editor) is ambiguous.

The Provider part of the string is fine, but the other property names do not match.

I suppose Server or file Name=Data Source=catalog name, and

Location = Locale ID or probably it is the Server name if you are connecting to a remote server?

Best regards

Kar

configuring Active/Active...

My Current configuration is:
Windows 2003, cluster service, SQL 2000 sp3
I have 3 databases I want to run one in the cluster node1 and the other two
databases in the node2.
So, when node1 fail, node2 take the node1 DB and vice-versa.
Is possible? do you know some URL where I can find information about it?
Another question: In the Active/Active my applications always make a
connection to the Virtual Server or to each Instance?
Thanks
AA
Yes, this is possible. You will need separate physical disks for each
installation of SQL. Each instance corresponds to a virtual server so the
SQL connection is to the IP of the virtual server and the port of the
instance. Since each instance is on a separate IP address, you can have all
instances using the same port number. All that is required to create a
second installation is to run the SQL install agaon and create a new
clustered instance using new resources (disks, network name, IP address).
