connect to server via intranet - how is it done (new to this)
I have msde2000 on one machine. want to connect to it from other machine. both machines are connected via a switch with integrated firewall.
Do I need to set up this firewall to enable connections? Like opening ports for msde in the virtual servers settings of the firewall?
If I do this, will that make my sql-server visible and accessible to the internet?
Or should I be able to find my sql server without such steps. And if so how?
networking is up and i can access folders of both machines via the intranet. Is that enough or do i need more settings here?
Let's say the machine and thus the server is called Alpha. What goes into my connectionstring from the other machine?
this wont be enough, right?
strconn = "Provider=SQLOLEDB;" & _
"Data Source="Alpha";"
Please shed some light on these questions.
tia
KumaFirst you will have to configure the ODBC settings in your machine. Make sure the datasource name is "alpha" , the same as the server name. You can then use "alpha" in the connection string. The code that is required is
'VB Code starts here

db.Open
'ASP Code starts here
Set db = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
db.Open "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=alpha;Initial Catalog=Northwind;User Id=XXX;Password=YYY"

connect to MSSQL2005 via ODBC
But from an other machine -there is no client installed - using driver 2000.85.1117.00 I get the message "Server dosn't exist or access denied"
How I can connect ? It is due to the fact of .NET FRAMEWORK 2 ?
Thanks!Sounds like the 'other' machine is your first network client - check your enabled protocols with SQL Server Configuration Manager.
Also, check your connection details include the instance name if necessary.
Also, what are the OS levels and authentication method?|||Hi, Mulhall. Indeed, it's the first network client W2K, connections to other sql2000 servers are o.k., to SQL2005 tried using TCP/IP-Protocol, tried Named Pipes and all others. Using the standard instance, no named, using SQL-authentication such as win-authentication, tried connection by server-name and by IP-Adress. OS-Ping works normaly.|||Have you verified using the Surface Area Configuration tool that remote connections are enabled?

Connect to MSDE with Limited User (not using sql authentication)

The MSDE instance is not in sql authentication mode, only windows

'Trusted_Connection=True;' in the connection string, but a login fails
for the user with an error like:
"Cannot open database in login 'testdatabase'. Login fails. Login

Do I need to grant any (additional) rights to the database itself?
Thanks for your help,

You can=B4t mix up the keyword "USER ID" and Trusted_connection, if you
choose "User ID" (SQL Server auth.) SQL Server will use SQL Server
authentication regardless of the Trusted_connection settings, see more
details here:

Connect to MSDE Instance via Internet.
I installed it at my house and can connect from work no problem.
Installed it at a customers and I can not connect to it.
I can access their Linksys router and have the correct ports forwarded (I
tried setting the DMZ on, it made no difference) 1434 UPD and 3605 TCP
(although I have them set to BOTH at this time)
Netstat -an shows that both 3605 and 1434 are listening.
TELNET 72.XXX.XXX.50 3605
(I also tried TELNET 72.XXX.XXX.50\InstanceName 3605) didn't know if I
needed the instance name.
Does nothing. But if I telnet my computer at home it clears the screen like
it should.
I have turned off their windows firewall and disabled their McAfee firewall
but no change.
I also open port 79 (we do some communication before we open SQL Server) and
it communicates fine. So I think I have the router set up OK.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Rob
PS. It was installed as follows:
setup SAPWD=XXXX DISABLENETWORKPROTOCOLS=0 SECURITYMODE=SQL INSTANCENAME=RRRob,
Always difficult ones.
I found that TCP and UDP 1433-1434 open on both inbound and outbound solved
my problems. Also, I had problems if there were 2 NICS involved. Always
configure connections for the lowest IP in the range.
The other issues I've had with MSDE was that MSDE did not enable the TCp/IP
protocol by default. Use Enterprise manager, r-click the server, properties,
network config and check that tcp/ip and named pipes are enabled protocols.

Connect to external DataBase Via SQLExpress?
If I have an IP address for an external SQL DB with valid User & Pass... Can I connect to it using SQLExpress on my machine?
If so can anyone point me towards how to do it, or run through it below (In easy steps as I'm dumb )
Hi,
Yes, In the Server Name write your IP Address and Select Authenticaion Mode as SQL , supply your given credential and thats it!!! Once it let you in , right click on that IP Address in left corner and right click on it and select Register to Register the server.

|||You can use Sql Server Management Studio (SSMS) to connect to other servers also. In Object Explorer window of SSMS, you have a Connect Combo in Top Left corner of Object Explorer window.
Steps are as follows
(a) Press on Connect
(b) Select Database Engine - You will get a "Connect To Server " window
(c) In this window Give IP Address in Server Name Text Box
(d) giver login name and passoward
(e) Press Connect Button

How can i do this ?
thx.|||Sometimes you can't directly ping the pc. I also had this problem b4.
First you have to check and see if your Server (10.0.0.1) has port 1433 opened to the network.
Before you do this, make sure at your (10.0.0.1) server your SQL Server instance is using 1433 port from SQL-Server->Server Network Utility-> Enabled Protocols-> Click TCP/IP->Properties-> Make sure is 1433.
You can't directly connect from QA from your own PC by specifiying the IP only cause u can't ping it in the first place.
You need to make a Client Network connection first.
Alias->Add->set network libraries=TCP/IP->Server Alias=ServerABC
->ServerName=10.0.0.1->Uncheck Dynamically Determine Port->
Make sure it is 1433.
Go to QA and connect using the Server Alias Name =ServerABC.
Hope this help. But it could be different situation altogether.|||You can use telnet to connect to the appropriate sql port as a quick test.|||How can i do this ?

Connect from VB6.0 via ODBCDirect to SQL Server
I have an existing application with frontend in VB 6.0 and backend in MS Access. I am trying to convert the application to SQL Server 2000 (standard) backend. At the moment the frontend uses ODBCDirect to communicate with MS Access backend. I upsized the MS Access database to SQL Server 2000 using MS Access upsizing wizard. (I know you need to use DTS, but I tried that and it did not copy the data across citing the error "The Server could not load DCOM", hence I used the upsizing wizard).
The backend now set up in SQL Server, I presume all I need to do is change the connection string in VB6.0, which I did, but I have not been able to make a successful connection yet. The following is the connection string I am using:
"ODBC;DSN=;Server=sql-server;Database=cabinetSQL;UID=dbo;PWD=;"
The SQL Server has been configured for windows authentication and the new database that I created due to upsizing, in the User section, it lists "dbo" as user name and login name is "domain/myloginname". So in the user ID I am using "dbo". I got some hints about how to connecte via ODBCDirect to SQL Server using the required workspace, as follows:
Set dbw = CreateWorkspace("pomsws", "admin", "", dbUseODBC)
Workspaces.Append dbw
Set pomsc = dbw.OpenConnection("pompom", dbDriverNoPrompt, _
true, con_string)
where con_string is the above mentioned connection string.
Can anybody let me know what I am doing wrong and provide any suggestions?
Thanks to all for your time and efforts.
Regards:
PrathmeshAn update on my question. I created a seperate small application just to test for the connectivity. The following is the code:
Dim strConnectionAdmin As String
Dim objConnAdmin As Connection
Dim CollegeRs As Recordset
Dim strsql As String
Dim i As Integer
Dim mdbodbcdirect As Database
Dim dbw As Workspace
Dim pomsc As Connection
strConnectionAdmin = "driver={SQL Server};Server=sql-server;Database=cabinetSQL;uid=;pwd=;"
Set dbw = CreateWorkspace("pomsws", "", "", dbUseODBC)
Workspaces.Append dbw
'On Error GoTo handler
Set pomsc = dbw.OpenConnection("pompom", dbDriverNoPrompt, _
False, strConnectionAdmin)
MsgBox "Connection success"
End Sub
This gives me an error "Invalid Argument" and points to the "Set pomsc" statement.
If I change the connection string to:
strConnectionAdmin = "ODBC;DSN=' ';driver={SQL Server};Server=sql-server;Database=cabinetSQL;uid=;pwd=;"
then it gives me an error for "ODBC-Call failed".
I am not sure where I am going wrong. Please help.

Prathmesh

database, but we need to make some steps on the remote database, gather some
data and then send this data to our main server via IP connection, setting
the connection every time when the remote server wants to transfer the data.
Is it possible at all if we don't create a linked database or whatever, just
from sql script? If yes, then how?
Dmitri.
You can do ad-hoc/pass through query via openrowset or opendatasource.

connect
I'm having the strangest problem.
SQL 2000 on a Win 2003 server.
I'm trying to connect via the query analyzer to the sql server on
another box. It was working all fine yesterday. Actually, it didn't
work initially. But I restarted the service MSSQLSERVER and I was able
to connect.
I can ping the SQL server IP. I can even ping it by the computer name,
WINBOX. The SQLServer is named WINBOX too.
Any ideas?BTW I looked at this KB article http://support.microsoft.com/?id=328306
and none of that seems to be my situation.|||Interesting find today.
If I log in or map a drive on the win 2003k machine I'm fine.
But if I don't I get an connection error.
This is beyond the my access rights to the SQL server itself.

configuring sql 6.5
Hi,
I can't see SQL 6.5 server installed on other computer. I am trying to
connect to it using SQL 2000, ODBC, ADO and none of this is helping. I
haven't experienced the same problems with SQL2000 installation. I have
installed it and all went ok. I do not change anyu network setting on this
computer and install SQL 6.5 and then i can't see this server. Maybe there
is some quick guide how to set SQL 6.5 as it seems to me that default
configuration do not work.

Tibor already answered the EM question in your previous thread (please do
not create new threads if it is not needed). 7.0 or 2000 EM cannot work
against 6.5 or earlier. You need EM 6.5 for that.
Please post the connection string for ODBC/ADO approach.
sincerely,

I know. I have asked one more question in last thread but I didnt get any
answers, so I created new thred. I've asked what do you mean EM 6.5? do you
mean new SQL 6.5 installation or only enterprise manager 6.5?

Tibor answered that:
If you want to administer a 6.5 machine from another machine, you only need
to do a client install on that machine.

I still have some problems and I will be very thankful for any help. I can't
see my SQL 6.5 servers from any computer. I'm stuck I don't know where the
problem is. Intergrated WinNT security setting is ok. Please help.

G'day Darius,
How can't you see them? Or put another way, with what can't you see
them?
Can you ping the server that SQL 6.5 is on?
Can you connect to that server with SQL Query Analyser?
Can you create an ODBC DSN for this server and test it successfully?
cheers,
Ross.

"It's not the right time to be sober,
Now that the idiots have taken over" - NOFX|||In Integrated Security, a 6.5 server can only listen to Named Pipes. And on
MDAC 2.6 and later, a client that work against a pre-2000 server will only
connect using the top most protocol in Client Network Utility, which is IP
by default. On the client, using Client Network Utility: Either move IP to
the top or create an alias for the 6.5 server.
